Dahlias
Sweet Nathalie
Dahlias look great in the garden bed or in containers. Look for a pot that is around six gallons for a single plant. A Jack Daniels Whisky barrel will comfortably hold three dahlias. Regardless of where you plant them, they will need staking. Don't skip this part:) Dahlia tubers come in many shapes and sizes. The size of the tuber does not determine the size of the plant or the bloom. Dahlias are divided into many different categories. My favorites are the ball dahlias like Linda's Baby, but I also love the open face dahlias like Star Child and Giggles. Bees love them too because of the easy access to pollen. The open face or single dahlias create more of a cottage garden vibe, another reason to love them. I have chosen seven dahlias for my core collection. Each year I will rotate additional varieties in, so there is always something new and different to look forward to. Potted dahlias are started in mid-April to give you a jump on the growing season. I plant mine in the garden or in pots Memorial Day weekend. See the video below for a great overview of dahlias in pots.

Dahlias must be picked up in Boothbay Harbor. I have made a limited number of tubers available in the online shop but the best way to reserve yours is to contact me by email. Until the tubers are pre-sprouted it is difficult to say exactly how many will be available. Potted tubers and bulk tubers can only be ordered by emailing me.

Dahlias can set the tone for your garden. These ball dahlias are a good choice for an anchoring color that brings cohesiveness to your garden bed. Soft white Center Court dahlias with pastel pink and peach colored annuals and perennials are a soothing combination. Isabel combined with deep wine and purple colored accent flowers creates a moody, intense vibe. Pink Sylvia anchors my Jewel Garden with bright pops of pink to balance the deep blues, purples and orange colors of the annuals and perennials and other dahlias. Linda’s Baby, my very first dahlia, is the focal point of my pastel garden which also includes soft yellow sunflowers, pale blue asters, and Gingersnap and Giggles dahlias. Groupings of 3 are the way to go for bigger gardens. I typically have three groups of three in a bigger garden, where in a smaller garden I would have three single dahlias spaced out along a 12-15’ bed.
